Our easy CBD oil recipe will net 6-7oz of excellent CBD oil for your general wellness needs. We use this oil primarily for relaxation and as a sleep aid. The potency of the final product is dependent upon the potency of the flower you select. The math for this recipe is at the bottom of this post. Also, see our post about the benefits of CBD oil.
Ingredients
- 1oz dry CBD cannabis flower
- 8oz MCT Oil
- 1 tsp Sunflower Lecithin
- 1 tbs Grain Alcohol
Tools
- Pressure cooker
- Three 16oz mason jars (or two if you clean one during the process)
- Canning funnel
- Cheesecloth
- Coffee filter
- Three binder clips (these are optional but do help with straining)
- Measuring spoons and cups
Decarb
Decarboxylation is the process of heating the cannabis flower to convert the CBDa to CBD. The same is true for THCa > THC. This process happens automatically when cannabis is vaped or smoked.
- Place your desired amount of cannabis in a mason jar and add a lid to fingertip tightness (not too tight). You do not need to grind the cannabis, just break it up into small, popcorn-sized pieces.
- Place the jar on the trivet or in the steamer basket.
- Place the trivet or basket in the Instant Pot.
- Add 2 cups of water to the Instant Pot.
- Secure the lid.
- Set the cooker to cook on high pressure for 40 minutes.
- After 40 minutes, carefully release the pressure.
- Remove the jars from the pot and set them aside to cool.
- After the jar is cool enough to pick up, spray 1 tbs of grain alcohol into the jar while turning the jar to coat the flower. Allow the alcohol to dry for 15 minutes. The alcohol will help to release the cannabinoids from the flower.
Infuse
Infusion is the process by which the cannabinoids and terpenes are released into the oil.
- Add 1 cup of MCT oil to the jar.
- Add 1 tsp of Sunflower Lecithin to the jar.
- Add a lid, twist to fingertip tightness (not too tight), and place the jar back in the cooker.
- Set the cooker to cook on high pressure for 40 minutes.
- While the butter is infusing, prepare your straining area. Whether it be a paper filter and funnel, cheesecloth, French press, or a simple coffee filter, you will want to set up a straining station to separate the plant matter.
Straining
- Release the pressure value. Once the pressure is released remove the jar from the cooker and set it some place to cool.
- Insert the canning funnel in a clean 16oz mason jar. Line it with the cheesecloth and clamp the cheesecloth to the sides of the funnel.
- Slowly pour the contents from the first jar into the lined funnel. Do not press the material. However, you may move it around with a spoon or a form to make it even. This process will remove the large plant matter.
- Let the oil filter into the jar for the next 20-30 minutes or until the oil stops dripping.
- Once the oil is through, discard the cheesecloth and the flower.
- Place the funnel in the third jar and line it with a coffee filter.
- Pour the oil through the coffee filter. This second straining will take some time. This part of the process will remove the smaller plant matter and the trichome hulls.
- Once all of the oil is through the filter, you can cap the contain jar and place it in the refrigerator until needed.
